Wal-Mart Subsidies in DeSoto, MO
|Address||Highway 21 and Old Boyd Street Road|
|Type of Facility||Supercenter|
|Value of Subsidies||approximately $1 million|
NarrativeThe city provided a $1 million sales tax rebate for this 155,000 sq. ft. Supercenter, which replaced a Wal-Mart discount store one-third the size. Wal-Mart agreed to use this location after rejecting a site that required brownfield remediation. Four months after the opening of the new Supercenter, a nearby unionized Schnucks grocery store closed, citing increased competition from Wal-Mart (St. Louis Post-Dispatch, February 17, 2005).
